The late Mr Ted Tabor founded Wortley Boys Junior Football Club in 1974 in an effort to create a positive social activity that would capture the imagination of the young people of Wortley. Thirty four years later, and the club, now simply called Wortley Football Club, has grown significantly and is at the very centre of Wortley, Armley and the wider West Leeds community; running twelve boys teams, two girls teams and three open age men's teams. The club is run by volunteers who give up their time to encourage and develop grass roots football within the community of West Leeds. As a club we are very proud of our place in the community and of the role we play in the lives of the many players, parents and supporters. We are committed to achieving and maintaining the highest standards throughout the clubs activities.
We encourage all parents to support good play, and sportsmanship, irrespective of which team is playing and we praise effort and performance more than results.
The club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club , we operate to the standards set by the FA for youth and open age football clubs. We take the standard very seriously, and all players, managers, coaches and spectators are expected to adhere to the FA code.
In our Junior section we run teams from Under 7's through to Under 17's, which includes boys and girls teams. In our Senior section, we run 3 mens teams and 1 womens team. For our younger children we operate a Wortley Football Tots sessions for children under the age of 6.
Since 1974, the football club has grown in size and we now have 20 teams with over 350 junior members and 65 senior members registered with the club.
All club coaches have the FA Level 1 Coaching in Football Certificaiton, are CRB enhanced checked and have current Safeguarding Children and First Aid certification. A number of our coaches also have the Level 2 FA Coaching in Football Certification.
Our Club Chairman Don Kent has been with club for 25 years, Ian Thackray, Club Secretary, has 15 years service and a number of our age group coaches, Paul Hatfield, Tony Carney & Roy Naylor have been with the club for over 15 years.
Our senior section match day is on a Saturday and our Junior Section match day is on Sunday. Matches are normally played on Sundays between the months of September and April. Our home games are played at Swallow Hill Community College, Wortley High School, Wortley Recreation Ground, Western Flats Park, Whingate Primary and Cobden Primary Schools which are all in the Leeds 12 area.
Each team has training sessions, at least once per week, during the season using the facilities at Swallow Hill Community College, Castleton Primary School and Holy Family Primary school.
The men's senior teams play in the Leeds Red Triangle League and the Wakefield & District League, our boys junior sections play in the Garforth Junior Football League, Leeds & District Junior League and Charles Rice League. Our girls teams compete in the West Riding Girls League and the senior women's team play in the West Riding Women's League.
We are constantly looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals to become involved with the management and coaching of our junior teams.
